The Filesender Service

🤝 A Community Solution

GARR Filesender is not just a file transfer tool, but a service developed by the community for the community. Based on the open source FileSender software, it was created to meet the specific security, transparency, and performance needs of the international research and education sector.

💡 Why is it different?

Unlike common commercial file sharing platforms, Filesender offers unique advantages:

  • Data Sovereignty: Files are hosted on GARR network servers (or the hosting institution), ensuring that sensitive research data never leaves the community's trusted infrastructure.
  • Federated Integration: Access does not require creating new accounts. Thanks to the IDEM Federation, you use your institutional digital identity, simplifying access while ensuring that only authenticated users can send files.
  • Designed for Research: Optimized to handle large volumes of data (up to hundreds of GB) that are common in scientific projects but often difficult to transfer via email or standard cloud storage.

🏢 Who manages it?

The service is managed by Consortium GARR, the Italian national ultra-broadband network dedicated to the education and research community. GARR ensures that the infrastructure is always high-performing and secure, connecting universities, research centers, libraries, and schools.
